Series: The Seven Sisters
Author: Lucinda Riley
Wanderlust, romance, and mystery all wrapped in one! … Well, technically it’s wrapped in seven books, but you get what I mean.
“Maia D’Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, “Atlantis”—a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva—having been told that their beloved father, who adopted them all as babies, has died. Each sister is handed a tantalizing clue to her true heritage—a clue that takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Once there, she begins to put together the pieces of her story.
Eighty years earlier in the Rio of the 1920s, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into the aristocracy. Meanwhile, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is devising plans for an enormous statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision. Izabela—passionate and longing to see the world—convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married. There, at Paul Landowski’s studio and in the heady, vibrant cafes of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again.”
Delve into the first book of The Seven Sisters series and you’ll be hooked to read the rest!
I found these books unique in the way they are written. Each book of the series follows the story of one of the sisters and their quest to find out where they came from and how they each came to be adopted.
Riley laid out the book in a unique way that equally shares the story of the present day sister with that of her bloodline 100 years in the past. The present tense and the past tense seamlessly swap over several times during the book.
Both the present day storyline and the past storyline are so gripping that each feels like it’s own standalone book. It’s only once the tenses swap back, that you remember there’s two storylines going on.
What I especially enjoyed about this series is that each book is set in a different country and the fictional storylines are written around factual events that took place in the past. Reading these has given me a great feeling of wanderlust during this time when we are limited with our travel due to COVID-19.
It’s hard to pick a favourite book in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed reading them all. Now I’m eagerly awaiting the seventh and final book to be released next year!
